In the last Time VMware has made some changes to the Product-Portfolio and this changes are somewhat confusing. I was asked by a Customer to explain the differences and what product is for what need should be taken. In my Blog here I’ll try to spotlight VMware Products and to categorize them in the right corner where they belong, so they can be more clearly
VMware is one of the leading Virtualization provider and the Product line is divided in four main categories:
- Data Center Virtualization or computer virtualization
- Storage virtualization or Software Defined Storage
- Network Virtualization or Software defined Network
- End user Computing and Mobility virtualization
Data Center and Cloud Infrastructur
For the Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure VMware delivers the following Products:
vSphere: VMware’s core Product for infrastructure virtualization containing the ability to use a lot of gogeous features such as vMotion, vSphere HA (High Availability), DRS and so one depending on the edition you buy. vSphere containes following products
ESXi: the Core component, the Hypervizor
vCenter Server: the centralized management server that manages multiple ESXi servers in the environment and enables most vSphere features
vSphere with Operations Management: delivers virtualization with consistent management, purpose-built to help maximize the benefits of virtualized data center and get the best performance, availability and efficiency out of the infrastructure and applications. Hereby is the vRealize Operations manager included to the vSphere for Monitoring, Optimization and Capacity Management.
vCloud Suite: an integrated solution that combine VMware vsphere and the following
VMware Site Recovery Manager: Desaster Recovery Tool that protect applications and automate recovery plans.
vRealize Automation and Business: offers rapidly and automated provisioning of infrastructure and Application, Efficient management and understanding the cost and consumption of Infrastructure.
vRealize Suite: complement the vCloud suite to manage non-vSphere Hypervizors, physical Infrastructure and Hybrid Cloud Environments.
Storage virtualization
Next generation Storage, an optimized solution for Hyperconverged infrastructure. VMware virtual SAN deliver integrated Enterprise-Class shared Storage services for virtualized production. Virtual SAN provides users the flexibility and control to choose from a wide range of hardware options and easily deploy and manage it for a variety of IT workloads and use cases. Virtual SAN can be configured as all-flash or hybrid storage.
Network Virtualization
VMware NSX: delivers programmatically managed and provisioned network solution independent of underlying Hardware. NSX presents a completly simplified and software defined Networking elements and services such as:
Logical Switching: presenting the L2 and L3 switching functionality in a virtual environment regardless oft he underlying Hardware
Logical Routing: provides dynamic Routing within different virtual networks.
Logical Firewall: distributed Firewall, kernel enabled rate performance, that is virtualization and identity aware, with activity monitoring.
Logical Loadbalancing: delivers Loadbalancer features with SSl termination
End User Computing and Mobility EUC
Delivers virtual or hosted desktop and Applications through a singel plattform. It present also the ability to manage Mobile Devices and Laptops. The presented Products hereby are:
